How to Call on Your Guardian Angels in Your Darkest Hours

111 Days of Love – Day 2 – How to Call on Your Guardian Angels When Your Situation Seems Hopeless

guardian angels

In Day 2 of 111 Days of Love, we teach how to call on your guardian angels in times of need.

“Open yourself to an encounter with heaven, be as a little child. Release your desire to the winds of the universe. Trust your angels to catch your wish and bring it to you in a delightfully surprising way.”

- Doreen Virtue

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

- Psalm 23:4

Should Rational People Believe in Angels?

Do you believe in angels? I know many people consider themselves to be too “rational” or “smart” or “logical” to believe in something that cannot be “proved with science.”

You might find it interesting to know that even great thinkers like Ralph Waldo Emerson apparently believed in angels. He wrote:

“The angels are so enamored of the language that is spoken in heaven that they will not distort their lips with the hissing and unmusical dialects of men, but speak their own, whether there be any who understand it or not.”

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

And, well, wasn’t it Michelangelo himself who said, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free” … why do you suppose he would put so many hours and so much passion into carving if he did not believe in angels?

I believe in Angels. To me, angels represent the highest and most powerful parts of ourselves. Today I want to fulfill the promise I made yesterday to tell you the story of Harvey the Cat and Pachelbel’s Canon. In my experience, the Angels speak to us through the magic of synchronicity … and it does not get any more magical than this …

Perhaps if you are one of the skeptics who does not believe in Angels, today’s story about the Angels and Pachelbel’s Canon might at least raise a question in your mind …

Working with Angel Cards

I began working with Angel cards a few years ago. Angel cards provide a fantastic way for us to hone our intuition. The most famous creator of Angel cards is Doreen Virtue. I have many of her paper card decks. Sometimes I offer angel card readings in my private coaching sessions with clients as well.

When I am on the road though, I do not want to be carrying angel cards around. So instead I use my iPhone to access the fabulous Angel Messenger website offered by Rev. Sheri.

Walking Through the Valley of the Shadow of Death for 40 Days and 40 Nights

As I shared in the last few blog posts, in mid-June, I found myself in an unspeakably awful situation. My beloved cat Harvey was suddenly paralyzed from the waist down by a blood clot.

From the very first moment of crisis, I called upon Archangel Michael and Archangel Raphael to help us heal Harvey the Cat. I had done the same thing for Fritz the Cat’s near-death experience nearly three years earlier.

It was a miracle already that we got him through the first few days of that crisis. Half the cats die in the first 48 hours, even if they are hospitalized, which he was not. And the ones who survive do not usually regain use of their legs for two to three weeks. By the third day, I was counting my blessings and thinking we were on our way to a full recovery. Energy healing had restored Harvey most of the use of his right leg. And I had even used Reiki to get his breathing smoothed out nicely.

Little did I know, that those first three days were only the beginning of our long walk through the valley of the shadow of death. We were in acute crisis for exactly 40 days and 40 nights, with one trauma after another in rapid succession.

Again, notice the synchronicity. I had just returned from visiting the birthplace and tomb of Jesus in Bethlehem and Jerusalem … the Star of Bethlehem shone over Grace Cathedral here in San Francisco for the first time in over 2000 years at the height of our crisis … and Jesus was tested in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights.

It was during this 40-day period that Satan tested Christ in the desert over and over again. This is known as the Temptation of Christ.

It certainly felt like we were being attacked by Satan. No sooner did I have Harvey the Cat’s breathing smoothed out … that he began sneezing over and over again. At first, I thought this was a good omen. He sneezed seven times in a row, which is a symbol of resurrection in the Bible.

Unfortunately, the sneezing did not stop. It continued. And it turned into a nasty respiratory infection that Harvey likely picked up during one of his vet visits a few days earlier.

This was a huge setback for us, because Harvey’s breathing started worsening. He had already lost a great deal of weight in the months leading up to this crisis and during the crisis when he was not eating. Now he could not smell his food. Each time he tried to eat, snot drained down his nose and made it hard for him to breathe. He was rapidly losing weight.

This respiratory infection seemed to go on forever. But that was not the worst part. The worst part is that it was masking – or possibly even creating – a much more serious problem. The additional stress that the infection put on Harvey’s body, after the intense stress of the straddle thrombus and paralysis … put too much strain on his heart. Unbeknownst to me, his lungs were filling up with fluid. He was developing congestive heart failure. The respiratory infection was so bad that it masked the symptoms of the heart failure until it was almost too late.

Somewhere around July 7, I realized that Harvey’s nose was no longer congested, and yet his breathing was getting worse. He was so scared of the vet that I really did not want to bring him in … but by July 9, it was clear that he was having a great deal of difficulty with his breathing. Amazingly, he was still cheerful and walking around … but I was definitely getting worried.

In retrospect, it is very clear that only by the Grace of God did Harvey the Cat survive this final week leading up to July 9 … because he had been in severe congestive heart failure for days. The Angels were with us every step of the way.

On the night of July 9, I consulted with my neighbor. Our neighbor had been so helpful to us throughout this ordeal. We were trying to decide whether it was time to take Harvey the Cat to the emergency room. So I got on Rev. Sheri’s angel card website … and we got the “Consult an Expert” Angel card over and over and over again.

Okay, consult an expert … that guidance from the angels seemed abundantly clear. We put Harvey the Cat in the carrier, with Fritz the Cat so he would be less stressed, and took him back to the vet.

When we arrived at the vet, they took Harvey the Cat immediately. The front desk clerk told me, “The doctor said if we don’t get your cat stabilized immediately, he may die.”

When my neighbor and I went to the examination room to hear from the vet, we heard the absolute worst news any pet lover could hear. Harvey the Cat was in severe congestive heart failure. He had developed cyanosis of his gums, a bluish discoloration of the skin resulting from poor circulation or inadequate oxygenation of the blood. The only good news was that his gums had turned pink again when they put him in the oxygen tank.

For about 30 minutes, the veterinarian told us how poor the prognosis was for Harvey the Cat. His lungs were full of fluid. He could be kept at the hospital, in the oxygen tank, and they would try to save him. They would have to puncture his lungs to drain the fluid. They would give him injections of Lasix, a powerful loop diuretic that helps drain fluid out of the lungs.

The vet said, “It’s never a good sign when an animal’s body cavities are filling up with fluid.” Even if he survived the night and the procedures, his prognosis was extremely poor.

So I could euthanize him, and it would only cost $245.

Or, I could put all my faith in God and the Angels, and sign the contract they presented me to treat him. It would cost several thousand dollars minimum. With very little hope of a positive outcome.

Euthanasia for $245. Just avoid the issues, Erika. Put yourself into a deep coma of unconsciousness. The Temptation of Christ.

My neighbor, who has known Harvey the Cat since he was a kitten, was crying her eyes out listening to all this bad news. I had been crying for weeks.

And yet, at that moment, I had done so much energy healing about the situation … that a holy instant came to me right there and then.

“Your lips move, but I can’t hear what you’re saying.”

On one level of my mind, I heard every word the vet said – and that she, like all the vets we had already spoken to over the past couple of weeks, did not recommend treating Harvey the Cat.

Yet a feeling of absolute calm and faith had come over me. I felt firmly grounded. As her lips moved, and all the horrible words came out … what I heard was the Workbook lessons of A Course in Miracles supplanting her words. It was like when the adults talk in the Peanuts movies. Wuh-wuh, wuh-wuh-wuh, wuh-wuh.

Nothing I see means anything. Nothing she says means anything.
I have given everything I see all the meaning that it has for me.
These thoughts do not mean anything.
I have invented the world I see.

I already knew what I was going to do.
For the past two weeks, my mind had been filled of happy images of all the joy Harvey the Cat had brought me in our eleven years together. I remembered how I faced the same awful choice with Fritz the Cat. I knew if I didn’t give Harvey the Cat every chance for a miracle, the same chance I had given to Fritz, that I would never forgive myself.

Still, I asked the angels for confirmation of this decision. I got out my iPhone and did a four-card reading on the Angel Messenger website. The four cards I got were:

1- Topic of the Angel Message – Consult An Expert. This was the same card we got before we left the apartment, clearly referring to consulting the veterinary clinic.

2- Challenge or Influence – The Angel of Marriage. As I explained to my neighbor in the examination room, the “marriage” card can refer to a contract. This seemed to be referring to the contract they had handed me regarding Harvey the Cat’s treatment plan.

3- Your Angels Guidance – Celeste – This card indicates that a happy move to a new home or place of employment is in the works. This movement will usher in positive energy.” This seemed to refer to the “move” of signing the contract and having Harvey treated at the hospital.

4- Outcome – Yes. This card states that “Your intuition is correct, please take action accordingly.”

Now I’ve had a lot of very powerful angel card readings over the past several years, but I don’t think one has ever been more clear or powerful than this one! It was exactly spot on in answering the question I was asking. That sealed the deal.

With a level of calm and peace that shocked me under the circumstances, I went to the front desk and signed the contract. My neighbor was with me the whole time, and was standing next to me.

As I lifted the pen from the page, suddenly I became aware of music playing faintly over the loudspeaker.

“Music is well said to be the speech of angels.”

- Thomas Carlyle

Was that … no, it couldn’t be … yes, yes it was … and as I stood there, it grew louder and louder … They were playing Pachelbel’s Canon.

The Marriage song! To celebrate the signing of the CONTRACT, just like the Angel cards had said with the Angel of Marriage.

I felt so moved I started crying. This was such a good omen. It seemed another good omen that when I finally got home that night, the clock said 1:11 am.

And we needed all the good omens we could get, because we were not out of the woods yet … There is so much more to the story of what happened over the next two days.

For now though, I’ll skip ahead to what happened when I got to take Harvey home two days later. It was time to sign the final bill. And again as I lifted the pen off the paper after signing … I could not believe my ears …

In amazement, I discerned that Pachelbel’s Canon was playing AGAIN at the exact moment I signed … except this time, it was a different version of the Canon. This version included choir singing, and not just the instrumentals. It sounded like … ANGELS singing.

And so it was. After all, there is no way Harvey would have survived this experience without angelic assistance.

Throughout his time in the hospital, I saw the number 111 everywhere. So many license plates.

And when I put him in the car to drive him home … with such gratitude in my heart that his life had been saved … I found myself behind a ServPro cleaning van right in front of me.

Their motto? “Like it never even happened,” emblazoned on their van.

It wasn’t quite as clean a healing as that, but again, I heard the angels speaking to me.

So now it’s your turn. Do you believe in angels? Have you worked with your guardian angels?

I hope this little vignette will inspire more people to call upon the angels in their darkest hours.

That’s crazy… I keep seeing the number seven. Your cat sneezed seven time’s. The weirder part is my sister’s name is Alycia… in the bible story the ladies name is Elisha. I’ll keep it short but Years ago I ago started getting sick(which now I can see as the beginning of my awakening) my sister freaks like no other. she typically acts as if it’s about her if someone else is in trouble. which is upsetting. i couldn’t even fathom having to deal with her and her noise so I stayed whole hardheartedly on the path towards healing. so she was a one of many major catalyst in me doing my healing never knowing where it was going to take me years later. She is also the reason years ago I started undoing giving sympathy to other’s dealing and diving deeper into anger and grief. and many many other thing’s and more to come. If I think about her presence kept towards waking up. She has created a lot of upset’s in my life but it has kept me deep on my path and Even though I always felt she did me wrong I know I am going to be very abundant one day because of her.

  2. This is a really interesting perspective, though the complete opposite of my own viewpoint. I can appreciate the comfort that the belief in them bring people, though.

  3. fritz Miller says:

It is nice to have friends in high places
When we call in angels they help us
Why not give then jobs to do
Angels do best when we keep them busy
Odd that Erika has a cat named fritz with kidney issues
Odd that Erika also has friend named Fritz who also had kidney issues.

  4. Lisa Rios says:

I just loved every part of this story. I am someone who has always believed that a guardian is always above you in the form of angels. You could always sense it when you are alone, when you are depressed, when you are feeling helpless, I think everyone has a different perspective though. Thanks for your amazing story.

  5. Liz Mays says:

Sometimes I do get the feeling someone is looking out for me, although I hadn’t thought of it as a guardian angel. I like that comforting thought though.

  6. I come at this from a totally different perspective.
Yes, I believe there are angels because they are written about in the Bible but because I am a Christian I would never call on them for help.
Why go to something else when you can go straight to the source?

  7. Namaste says:

    Erika,

I’m really glad you shared this story. It’s such a powerful example of ignoring the facts, selecting the reality you want and living into it. This takes a ton of courage to do. Definitely the mark of a master =)

    • Thank you Namaste. Yes, as for those “facts” … leading up to this moment when we checked Harvey the Cat into the hospital, I had about two and a half weeks since the original paralysis incident to tap away those “facts.” That’s why I felt so calm and clear when we finally got to this point. They had sent me home with sheaves of medical literature. I also did a bunch of research on the internet. It was critically important that I “remove” that “reality” from my subconscious mind through dedicated releasing … to pave the way for the possibility of a new outcome.

Really appreciate you stopping by, meets my needs to be seen and heard. :)

  8. Elizabeth O. says:

I’d like to think that there’s someone watching over me everyday and guiding me through the challenges in life. Whether it’s an angel, I don’t know but I’d like to think so.

  9. This is such a powerful story. I do believe in angels. I know it’s a bit different but I was having trouble conceiving a baby. We had been trying for a while and I had kinda given up. My mom was very ill the last week of August. I spent a ton of time at the hospital just to sit with her since I knew her time was short. Needless to say during her funeral a wild imagination came over me, “what if I’m pregnant”? I kept this to myself and didn’t say a thing to anyone, not even my husband. Well about a month later, I found out that I was indeed pregnant. I got pregnant around my mom’s passing and felt that she was the “angel” who blessed me with a son.

  10. I have always believed in angels and those that are our guardian angels thanks for bringing this back to my attention as I need some angel intervention =)

  11. James says:

Though your love speaks with the tongue of angels allowing the prose of Healing Faith be established. Allow the AnimalSpirit the symbiotic embrace it patiently desires.

  12. ROBIN Masshole mommy says:

I know there are lots of people out there who believe that guardian angels exist. I would need to see one to believe it, though.
