Erika, I agree with you about most things. And then I agree and disagree with you about and sex. Yes, somehow it has become totally dominated by the ego and with unrealistic expectations about what it is supposed to provide. So much so that, briefly, people create some special meaning in sex that doesn't actually exist. That said, we're designed to be quite promiscuous and it's purpose may simply be to feel good and not much more. My belief is that the purpose of sex is for bonding. Not pair bonding or attachment for meaning; it exists to deepen the connection between human beings. Oxytocin is released during sex and the feeling of bonding and pleasure is there for a reason. I don't believe the universe designs us to hurt ourselves. I do believe sex is a platonic tool for brief pleasure and bonding. Nothing more and no deeper "meaning" beyond that. The problem is that the expectations are romantic fantasy (fantasy being the definition of romance) or sex is used for gain, dominance, manipulation and so much more egotistical reasons that we turn it into something it can't be and it's just bad all around. You should read Sex at Dawn. It's a really good book.

And then there is everyone's misinterpretation of ACIM pertaining to the "special relationship." I will never understand how people are able to see monogamy in those chapters but they do. To be sure, ACIM does provide them with a smidgen of slippery slope to apply their biased beliefs. Statements such as - paraphrasing - the holy spirit is present in all relationships and seeks to make them holy and will not abandon them - gives people cause to believe it means finding oneness in congress with another person as long as you tell yourself the relationship is holy. I will never understand how they draw that conclusion but they do. Keep up the good work.
